The Book of Mormon - Another Testiment of Jesus Christ - Teachings For Our Day

The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture with many wonderful stories that apply to us in our day and time.  The book centers on one person; Jesus Christ.  The title page states that the Book of Mormon’s purpose is to convince all of us "that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD, manifesting himself unto all nations."

I have many favorite stories from the Book of Mormon.  One of them is found in first Nephi, Chapters 3 & 4.  Nehpi's father Lehi was a prophet of the Lord living in Jerusalem about 600 BC.  The Lord warned Lehi that the Jerusalem would soon be taken into captivity and commanded him take his family and flee into the wilderness.  After a short time in the wilderness Lehi asked his sons to return to Jerusalem to obtain some plates of brass that contained a history of the Jews as well as the genealogy of their family.  Nephi's brothers complained that this was a hard thing that they were being asked to do.

Nephi, on the other hand, demonstrated great faith.  In 1 Nephi 3:7  we see this great faith: "And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."

This is a lesson for all of us.  Following the Lords commands is not easy.  It sometimes requires us to leave our comfort zone.  It sometimes requires us to place complete trust in someone else.  If we exercise our faith the Lord will make a way for us to be successful.

Nephi and his brothers were successful in obtaining the brass plates.  It wasn't easy.  They had to try more than once to obtain these records.  Their very lives were in danger.  But the Lord provided the way for them.  I encourage you to read the entire account in 1 Nephi 3 and 1 Nephi 4.

The Book of Mormon is the word of God, just like the Bible.  I know this to be true.  You can know this for your self by reading from its pages and asking your Heavenly Father in sincere prayer.

Thoughts on the Sacrament

Today as I sat in our Sacrament meeting, I had the opportunity to reflect on the ordinance of partaking of the bread (His body), and the water (His blood).  I thought of our Savior, whose body was so brutally beaten, then was hung on the cross to die. Through His death we were given the great blessing of the resurrection.

I recalled when I was young, an experience where I had stolen some candy from a school store. I felt very guilty later and eventually confessed to my parents what I had done. I felt awful.  I was taken to the store, by my mother, and told the person in charge of my actions, paid for the stolen candy, and apologized for my actions. Afterwards, however, I knew that I had done the right thing and felt better.

I thought about our Savior, who without sin, was in the garden of Gethsemane paying the price for all of our sins. The awful way I felt after doing something wrong would have been magnified a gazillion times over for all of the sins the people who lived and will live on the earth! His suffering caused even the Son of God to bleed from every pore!

My heart fills with love and gratitude that He lived, suffered, and died for me and for all mankind! I am so grateful that I get to think of Him, and renew my commitment to Him each and every Sunday as I partake in the ordinance of the Sacrament.
